Example of Practical Work:

HARDWARE.

A moment in which during the production stage where I used the different platforms was during our actual shoot day; hardware, in particular, featured heavily as something I frequently used.

As the director of photography for our shoot, I used a Black Magic 4K Mini URSA camera, a Vinten tripod, a Sennheiser Shotgun mic, and a Lexar Pro memory card. To get started, I set up the camera in the garden room by extending the tripod, working from bottom to top and achieving my desired length/height. I used the clips on the legs of the tripod to keep the stand stable for the camera. I then unloaded the camera from its case and slid it onto the designated slot on the tripod, locking it in for maximum safety and allowing my hands to focus on other things whilst filming. To record sound, I attached the microphone to the camera via a wire (which we put in a holder with a muff windscreen to avoid any collisions and potentially ruining any recorded sound). This was particularly important as the microphone was made from porcelain, meaning that it was extra fragile.

When performing pans, I used the handle to tilt the camera (after having loosened the lock on the base of the camera), mainly keeping one hand on the body of the camera to keep it as smooth and stable as possible.

When performing focus pulls, I used the focus wheel, moving from set markers to another after testing them out and noting them beforehand to make the shot as smooth and crisp as possible so that our transitions were precise.

I also continuously used the aperture to adjust the exposure depending on the time of day and which room we were shooting in (using a blue light LED at the end of the day as we needed to mimic daylight as the sun had begun to set). I did this by turning the wheel with my fingers and watching the screen to see what was suitable for the eye. I occasionally looked through the camera's viewfinder for a more accurate depiction.

On a different note, I used my Samsung Galaxy 22 to film videos and take photos which I used in my behind-the-scenes video as well as to have visual examples to refer back to when creating possible marketing campaigns and for study in the editing process so that I had an idea of the space we worked in.

This all had been learned from the camera and dialogue workshops that I had attended earlier on in the term. All footage recorded on the day was stored on the Lexar Pro memory card, later to be transferred to the Apple Mac computers for editing.

PRODUCTION.

ONLINE AND SOFTWARE.

Throughout the shoot day, I used my android software phone to contact members of my group and actors; this was assisted by a call sheet that we had made on the online platform 'Google docs'. This contained everyone's contact details, including phone number, email address, house and name. Because of this, I continued to use the online platforms 'Whatsapp' and 'Outlook' to text and email from my phone. This came in handy as they were both quick and efficient.

Hardware, however, was our main platform as we were heavily immersed in the practical filmmaking experience.
